l'Abbaye des morts

l'Abbaye des Morts is a cool retro platformer by Locomalito and ported by Parisoft Games. You play as Jean Raymond, a Cathar monk who’s trying to dodge a major purge during the Albigensian Crusade. He ends up in this spooky abbey, but guess what? It’s hiding some serious dark secrets. The game totally vibes with that old ZX Spectrum aesthetic, throwing you back to the '80s with its simple graphics and eerie atmosphere. You’re on a quest across 23 unique screens, avoiding enemies and grabbing items while piecing together the abbey’s creepy story.

If you grew up in 80's, you're gonna love the graphics! They’ve got that NES graphics look nailed down with bright colors that pop against these dark backgrounds. The characters are all tiny and quirky, which just screams classic gaming. The sounds are fine, Gryzor87, who did the soundtrack, gives it this atmospheric vibe that starts out all adventurous and then gets super tense as you dive deeper into the game.

Now let’s talk gameplay. It’s all about being careful and strategic. You’ve gotta sneak around, avoiding enemies ‘cause one little touch means game over. It makes you think twice before jumping into a new area. But, here’s the kicker: there are checkpoints scattered around the place, so if you bite the dust, you’re not starting from scratch, thank goodness!

Exploring is where the fun's at. You’ll find these cool manuscripts chilling in the abbey that give you hints and add some backstory; it keeps things interesting. Sure, it gets tricky, especially when you’re trying to collect all the crosses, but that’s where the challenge lies!
