DRAGON BALL Z: Extreme Butōden
DRAGON BALL Z: Extreme Butōden is a love letter to classic DBZ fighting games, blending fast paced 2D action with a huge roster of over 100 characters, tho only about 20 are fully playable. The rest serve as supports, jumping in for quick attacks or buffs, which keeps battles chaotic and unpredictable. The game nails the feel of old school Butōden titles while adding modern mechanics like Hyper Dashes and Awakened Mode, where fighters unlock devastating moves when their health drops below 50%. The combat is fluid and easy to pick up, but the AI doesn't offer much challenge.

The Z Story mode lets you relive key DRAGON BALL Z moments from both hero and villain perspectives, but it's fairly barebones. The real standout is Adventure mode, an original what if scenario where Goku teams up with past villains to stop Omega Shenron. It's fun and packed with unlockables, tho grinding for Z-Assist characters is tedious, other modes like Extreme World Tournament and Survival offer decent replay value. One of the coolest features was the insane crossover update that let you throw down against players from ONE PIECE: Great Pirate Colosseum, but y'know the servers are long dead now, fingers crossed Pretendo can revive this gloriously random piece of gaming history someday.
Visually, Extreme Butōden shines with gorgeous pixel art that captures DRAGON BALL's iconic style. Special moves are flashy and true to the anime and the remixed soundtrack delivers nostalgia in spades. However, the game ain't without flaws: repetitive combat, some grindy unlocks and odd glitches like frozen sprites and costume mishaps hold it back. The lack of an English dub might also disappoint some people too, but at is core, is a fun celebration of DBZ's fighting game legacy.
