Innsmouth Mansion: Mario Madness Edition

Innsmouth Mansion is this obscure horror game that totally flew under the radar, probably because, well, it’s on the Virtual Boy. The story's your classic Lovecraftian vibe, you're trapped in this creepy mansion with all sorts of weird fish monsters (Deep Ones basically) and have to solve some puzzles and survive. It’s got that low key eerie atmosphere, which is kinda impressive for a system known for headaches and red graphics. Gameplay's a mix of dungeon crawling and point and click adventure, where you explore rooms, find keys, and avoid enemies. It's pretty basic but the tension's there I guess, since resources are limited and the monsters can mess you up fast.

Visually, it's… well, Virtual Boy. Everything's in those red and black visuals, which actually works in its favor because the shadows and depth make the mansion feel claustrophobic. The controls are clunky tho, since the Virtual Boy wasn't exactly built for smooth movement, so expect some frustration when you're trying to run from enemies. Also, it's super short and not very replayable. Once you figure out the puzzles, there's not much else to do and the lack of any real story depth hurts it, but considering it's the only horror game on a failed console, it's a cool curiosity.

The Mario Madness Edition turns it into a Mario themed thing, but honestly? It's kinda underwhelming. Instead of a full visual overhaul, it just rearranges the existing red and black levels into shapes of Mario stuff, like a Fire Flower or Boo, which is neat in theory but it's still more of the same, just differently shaped. The gameplay's tweaked so that your path and one of the four endings depend more on time than kills, which is a cool twist and the hack comes with level maps and a diagram showing how everything connects.
