Cardcaptor Sakura

This Cardcaptor Sakura game is a love letter to the early days of the anime that's more of an interactive scrapbook than a traditional adventure. Think of it as a retelling of the first batch of episodes where you get to poke around in the world instead of just watching it. The vibe it goes for is «animetic», meaning it's designed to feel like you're playing through an anime series and honestly it commits to that bit from the opening menu to the credits.

The game splits its runtime across two discs, walking you through about 14 chapters that cover the iconic early adventures of Sakura, Kero and Tomoyo. The format is pretty consistent: you'll watch a bit of a scene, then get control to walk around a small isometric map as a chibi version of Sakura (or sometimes Tomoyo) to talk to people or find the next trigger. Then you'll hit a minigame that represents capturing the Clow Card of the episode, watch another anime clip and repeat. The mix of gameplay is where it gets a bit messy but also kinda charming, some minigames are pretty fun… others tho, are a total drag… The one everyone points out is the fortunetelling card game that pops up for episodes they didn't fully adapt. AnyaSpeechless Instead of getting a proper level, you just flip over cards hoping for matches and it feels like a placeholder. It's a bummer 'cuz you can tell the developers had to cut corners to fit everything and you end up losing out on adapting some good episodes. Momo_Bruh

Where this game really shines is in its presentation 'cuz the pixel art has aged like wine, every sprite is overflowing with personality and the attention to detail is insane. Sakura changes outfits constantly, just like in the show, and Kero has so many goofy little animations that you'll find yourself just watching him for a minute. woahhh The music is ripped straight from the anime's soundtrack which is a huge win 'cuz those orchestral tracks are iconic and having the original voice actors bring everything to life makes it feel like a lost episode you get to control. The game is fully voiced which is another W and it adds so much to that «I'm inside the anime» feeling. dedenneyay

That said, you're not gonna find any challenge here. The exploration is basically just walking from point A to point B and the puzzles are sooo easy, it's clearly made for kids, not for someone looking for a deep experience. Bailu_ForYou Also, you have to accept that this is a game where you spend about half your time just watching the anime with pixel art bits in between, some people find that boring since they pulled a lot of footage straight from the show and the pacing is weird because they skip a huge chunk of the first season's second half and the reliance on that random card game for unadapted episodes feels like a cop out but as a way to relive the magic of early Cardcaptor Sakura, it's kinda unmatched 'cuz dripping with so much charm that you'll probably find yourself taking screenshots of everything. march7th_camera
