Lavender
Lavender is basically a retelling of Rapunzel, but not the Disney version with the chameleon and the floating lanterns, think more like the original fairy tale but with a lot of mystery and some creepy undertones if you go looking for them.
You play as Lavender, this adorable girl with pink hair who's turning 12 and living in a tower with her mom Rosalie. On her birthday, she accidentally drops her gift, a pretty comb, out the window, and even tho she's been told never to leave the tower, she decides to sneak down floor by floor to get it back. Each level is basically a new room with a different puzzle to solve and the goal is to keep descending until you reach the bottom.

The puzzles are honestly the heart of the game and they're a solid mix of tricky but not impossible. You've got stuff like figuring out a flower growing sequence, a chess riddle that trips up a lot of people (especially if you don't know chess
), a cauldron puzzle where you gotta mix ingredients and a statue puzzle that requires some memory work. Most people find the first flower puzzle kinda brutal for an intro but once you get past that, the rest feel rewarding to solve. The game doesn't hold your hand but it's not trying to frustrate you either, it's that sweet spot where you feel smart when you figure things out.
Visually, the game is gorgeous. The pixel art is soft and dreamy, with each floor having its own pastel color scheme like pink, blue, green and yellow, and that makes the whole tower feel almost magical. The save files even change color depending on what floor you're on, which is such a cute detail.
The character sprites are charming and the CGs you get at certain moments are really well done, the music fits perfectly too, starting off calm and almost like a lullaby but as you go deeper, it gets more unsettling without being overwhelming.
Now, the story is where things get interesting. On the surface, it seems like a sweet little tale about a girl disobeying her mom to get her gift back but there's way more going on if you pay attention. Scattered throughout the tower are these pink hairs you can collect and paintings on the walls that hint at a darker backstory. The game has two main endings: the normal ending, which is wholesome and makes everything feel fine and then the secret ending, which is where the horror tag comes in.
To get the secret ending, you have to collect all the pink hairs and use them to unlock a hidden area in the basement, and trust me, that completely changes how you see Rosalie and the whole Rapunzel setup. The game doesn't spell everything out, you're left piecing together clues from the paintings, the diary entries and the environment to figure out what Rosalie was really up to.
