Tomodachi Collection
Tomodachi Collection is basically the weird older brother of the Mii social sims you know from the 3DS and Switch games. It's the same deal, you populate an island with Miis, your own, your friends, whoever, and then you just watch 'em live. You get them from a built in Mii maker or beam them over from your Wii,
then pick their personality, their voice, even their blood type, and once they move into their little apartments, you become like… their god.
You feed them, dress them, decorate their rooms and they level up, which allows them to unlock new phrases or songs. The real charm tho is seeing two Miis become buddies or catch feelings, leading to some funny drama and when a couple finally gets hitched, roll credits.
No babies, no new generation, just a wedding slideshow and a pat on the back. Obviously, it's a much smaller loop than what came after.

Now, compared to Tomodachi Life or the most recent Living the Dream, this one feels like a rough draft but in the best way. The island's tiny, with fewer spots to hang out, you got your apartments, the city hall, a clothing shop, a food mart, a pawn shop and a question hall that does weird quizzes and judgment games. There's no concert hall so your Miis just belt out songs in their own apartments, which feels less grand. The fountain is where all the events go down like street live performances or English lessons instead of having a dedicated spot. The graphics are charming in that blocky way and get this, it runs at 60 FPS! Which neither the 3DS nor the Switch games do, the older DS one does!!
However, you lose a lot of customization, no hats, no hair dye, no super favorite foods, just one all time fave and one hated dish and the romance system is rougher, Miis can crush on married people and sometimes the married Mii will actually accept, so either they didn't think that one through or they intentionally threw NTR in there.
Honestly, even with the two latest entries, playing it now can still be fun. The TTS voices are in Japanese, some people find it creepy, others think it adds to the silliness. The fantranslation works for menus and dialogue but stuff like writing catchphrases or playing certain minigames (like the hiragana-based ones) is a headache if you can't read Japanese.
The soundtrack tho is pure bangers, a lotta people swear it's better than Tomodachi Life's music with that distinct DS synth sound that hits different but because there's less to do overall, you'll hit a wall where you're just logging in, feeding your Miis, maybe buying a new wallpaper and waiting for something chaotic to happen, it's not a game you binge for hours, it's a «check in for 15 minutes a day» kind of vibe.
So, if you're a huge Tomodachi Life fan, it's fascinating to see where all the weirdness started. It's rougher around the edges and way more limited but it has this experimental energy that the polished 3DS version lost a little bit, the marriage ending feels like a natural stopping point whereas the 3DS game keeps going with kids and traveling and some people even prefer the simpler tone of the original.
Download
If you're ready to play god on a tiny island and watch your friends fall in love, fight over snacks or drop news reports that you won't understand, grab your stylus and pick your translation, English, Spanish, whatever lets you actually read the menus. Crack open that .RAR file, then drag the freed folders onto the root of your 3DS SD card. Fire up FBI and let it do its magic, then the chaos can begin! The whole island's future depends on you, so get downloading, little landlord. It's time to feed them their favorite food and watch 'em blast off into orbit.
