bygone snow
bygone snow is a very special lil thing, it's not just a GBA homebrew game, it's a short experience clocking in around 45 minutes, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's shallow. The whole game is about two girls stuck together in a cabin as the world literally ends around them. There's this impending doom from some shadow monster things and the government's gonna nuke everything hoping to wipe 'em all out, and Edell, our protagonist with literally no one else to turn to, reaches out to Weiss, and she's just… cold, like… brutally coarsely cold.
She's got all this pent up anger and resentment and you can feel it in every pixel of her dialogue but as you continue through the story, you slowly start to understand why she's so bitter and that's where the writing really shines. It's all about the messy complicated history they share and how they're forced to confront it when there's no tomorrow left.

The presentation is genuinely good. The visuals are all handdrawn, giving it this really organic paper atmosphere that looks like children's drawing in a good way, which instantly adds to the gritty and melancholic vibe.
The soundtrack by Kishan02 and Mireille Scieppan is just as important, it's a low key atmospheric set of tunes that feel a bit grimy and awkward like stumbling footsteps and it creates this really immersive chilly winter atmosphere that makes you feel the cold seeping into the cabin.
Now let's talk about the story itself 'cuz it's the heart of the whole deal: There are no choices or branching paths, it's a completely linear experience where you're just along for the ride, but the writing is so tight and nuanced that every line of dialogue feels deliberate, dripping with history and unspoken pain.
You're not just reading words, you're unpacking years of a complicated relationship, the way the game slowly peels back the layers on why Weiss is so angry and why Edell is so desperate is affecting. It's kinda heartbreaking to watch them navigate their feelings when they know the clock is ticking. It doesn't rely on cheap melodrama, it feels raw and painfully human but also weirdly beautiful, capturing that feeling of wanting to make things right when it's already far too late and the kind of story that lingers in your head long after the credits roll, leaving you staring at the wall and thinking about life.
And speaking of the credits, there's a song at the end with Kasane Teto, which is a really nice touch to end things on, and judging by the overwhelmingly positive Steam reviews, it's hit a lot of people right in the feels. People calls it devastatingly beautiful and they cried over it, like me.

The world's already ending, so you might as well spend your last moments right. If you wanna bring bygone snow onto your 3DS, your console needs to be running homebrew first. Once that's settled, open up the FBI app from your HOME Menu and point it at the QR code below. It'll pull the game straight into your system. When it's done, the title will show up among your other icons, ready to go, boot it up, find somewhere quiet and let yourself sit with Edell and Weiss as everything freezes over.
If Edell and Weiss managed to hit you somewhere deep, consider tossing a few bucks toward the supporter pack here. It's completely optional but it's a nice way to say «Hey, this wrecked me in the best way possible» and help the dev keep making these beautifully devastating little stories. You'll get some extra goodies and every bit of support means the world to a project that was built in two weeks with so much heart. The game's free but if you've got three dollars to spare and wanna show some love, it'd mean a lot. The snow keeps falling either way but it's nice knowing someone out there appreciates the chill.
