Spawn Collection
Welcome to the Spawn Collection! We're about to take a trip through some of the wildest, jankiest and most ambitious attempts to bring everyone's favorite hell spawned antihero to the gaming world. Each one of these not so classics has its own flavor of chaos. Just know that we're diving headfirst into a mixed bag, some gems, some trainwrecks, but all of them undeniably Spawn. Let's get into it!
Spawn Collection
Todd McFarlane's Spawn: The Videogame
The first entry is a standard sidescrolling beat 'em up where you take control of the big guy himself on a mission to save some kidnapped kids from a demon called The Mad One. The first thing that'll hit you is the sprite work, Spawn looks sick with an iconic design and pretty fluid animations for the time. The combat is decent enough, you got your punches and kicks but the real fun is in the special moves you can pull off with STREET FIGHTER style inputs.
The main gripes? The level design can gets repetitive, enemy variety is lacking which is basically a tradition in superhero games at this point and the story is as basic as it gets, but even with its flaws, it's a solid moody brawler that captures the dark gothic vibe of the comics way better than most licensed games from that era.

Spawn
A few years later, KONAMI tried to cram Spawn into a tiny cartridge for the GBC making an action platformer with some run and gun bits thrown in. You're still Al Simmons, battling through nine levels of thugs and demons with punches, kicks and weapons like a chain or a machine gun. The wildest thing about this portable version is the digitized speech in the cutscenes which's is pretty rare and impressive feat for the system.
There's even a sidescrolling motorcycle level where you're kicking bikers and shooting stuff, which sounds cool but that's about where the fun ends. The combat is super simplistic, the animations are jerky and the controls feel sluggish. To make it worse, the level designs are boring and the game's difficulty is all over the place. It's a shame 'cuz it had a cool idea but the execution just wasn't there, making it a forgettable and frustrating experience overall.
Spawn The Eternal
Where do I even start with this one?
The PlayStation game is infamous for all the wrong reasons. The idea was ambitious: a 3D adventure where you explore environments Tomb Raider-style but when you get into a fight, it switches to a side view brawler. Sounds cool, right? Wrong. It's bullshit.
The controls are clunky and unresponsive making even simple tasks like walking through a door a chore, the camera is constantly lagging behind and getting stuck in terrible angles that make it impossible to see what you're doing, textures are grainy and pixelated with walls and objects constantly popping in and out of existence and even the combat is broken, with delayed hits and ineffectual attacks. It's widely considered one of the worst games on the PS1 for a reason and it's a huge bummer because Spawn deserved so much better than this shit.
