Duke Nukem 3D

Duke Nukem 3D is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic first person shooters ever made. It took the formula that DOOM popularized and injected it with a huge dose of personality, crude humor and an unparalleled sense of style. You step into the boots of the patriot himself and it's a blast from start to finish, the game is pure unadulterated '90s action full of pop culture references and over the top machismo that, for better or worse, cemented Duke as a gaming legend. It's feels like it was made by a group of bros who just wanted to make the coolest thing they could imagine.

The levels are highly praised for their interactivity, they're actual locations like movie theaters, strip clubs and city streets packed with details. You can blow up walls, shoot out light switches, use urinals to regain some health and even tip strippers for a little show. This makes the world feel alive and simple navigation feel like a playful adventure, encouraging you to explore every corner for secrets. The gameplay itself is fast and fluid with an arsenal that's both versatile and fun to use, the difficulty is well balanced, offering a fair challenge that'll keep you on your toes without feeling unfair (most of the time) and the soundtrack's a mix of atmospheric tracks and metal tunes from Bobby Prince and Lee Jackson, is nothing short for a legendary title.

And we can't talk about Duke Nukem without addressing its humor, which hasn't aged well. It's filled with sexual innuendo and a constant stream of movie oneliners ripped straight from classics like Evil Dead II, They Live and ALIENS. While people might find it cringey or even offensive today, specifically its portrayal of women, remember that it was never meant to be taken seriously, it's kinda like a parody of '80s action movies. If you don't mind it and just laugh at its absurdity, you'll find the charm that makes Duke Nukem so memorable.

The plot is as thin as they come: aliens invade Earth, steal all the hot babes and Duke has to save the day, which's the perfect excuse to blast through 3 episodes of pure action. The first one is arguably the best with its urban setting but the other two still offer a lot of variety in its scenarios. However, if there's a knock against it, it's that the game can sometimes feel a little too mazey, especially in the second episode and some of the enemy designs like the goddamn Sentry Drones can be a real pain. Also, the level design can also lead to some frustrating moments where you're aimlessly wandering around trying to find the one switch you missed. Despite these minor gripes, the core gameplay loop is so tight and rewarding that it's easy to forgive the occasional hiccups.
