OFF

OFF is this weird, surreal RPG that throws you into a world that’s equal parts unsettling and fascinating. You play as the Batter, this stoic dude with a baseball bat (hence the name), who’s on a mission to «purify» the world by slaughtering these grotesque, puppet-like creatures called Specters. The world is divided into zones ruled by mysterious, god-like figures known as the Guardians, each with their own twisted domain. Along the way, you meet a talking cat named Japhet, a hulking whale-man named Dedan, and a bunch of other bizarre characters who either help you or get in your way. The deeper you go, the more it becomes clear that nothing is what it seems, especially the Batter himself.

The game’s got this eerie, dreamlike vibe, with cryptic dialogue, unsettling music, and environments that shift between sterile, empty spaces and grotesque, fleshy hellscapes. It’s kinda short but it packs a punch with its atmosphere and mind-bending storytelling. By the end, you’re left questioning who’s really the hero, or if there even is one.

OFF is one of those games that sticks with you because of how off (no pun intended) it feels. The art style is simple but effective, lots of stark whites and grays, contrasted with sudden bursts of disturbing imagery. The soundtrack is a masterpiece in setting tone, mixing melancholic piano tracks with eerie industrial noises that make every zone feel unsettling in its own way.

Gameplay-wise, it’s a standard turn based RPG, but with some neat twists. Combat’s straightforward: attack, defend, use items, but the real challenge comes from managing your limited resources and figuring out enemy weaknesses. The real meat of the game isn’t the fights, though; it’s the world and the way it slowly unravels. The writing is cryptic as hell, full of symbolism and unreliable narration. You’re never quite sure if the Batter’s mission is righteous or just straight-up monstrous, and the game never spells it out for you.

The characters are the highlight, each Guardian has this tragic, almost Shakespearean vibe to them, and even minor NPCs drop weird, philosophical lines that make you pause. The Batter himself is an enigma; he’s silent most of the time, but his actions speak volumes. Is he actually a hero? The game lets you decide.

Where OFF really shines is in its atmosphere and storytelling. It doesn’t rely on jumpscares or gore, it’s the implications of what’s happening that creep you out. The way the world degrades as you "purify" it, the way characters react to you, the slow realization that maybe you’re the villain—it’s all brilliantly unsettling.

That said, it’s not for everyone. If you need clear answers or fast-paced action, this ain’t it. The combat can feel repetitive, and the abstract storytelling might frustrate players who prefer straightforward plots. But if you’re into surreal, thought-provoking experiences, OFF is a cult classic for a reason. It’s short, strange, and leaves you with more questions than answers, in the best way possible.
