The core of Humanity in Chains is the ODM gear combat, and it’s a mixed bag. When it works, it’s exhilarating, zipping through the air, targeting Titan weak spots and pulling off those satisfying nape slices feels awesome, but the controls can be janky, especially when the camera freaks out mid swing or the autotargeting decides to focus on the wrong limb. The game tries to mix things up with escort missions, base defense and Titan hunting but the mission variety gets repetitive fast. The AI is also kinda dumb, your squadmates often feel like dead weight, and Titans sometimes just stand there waiting to be killed. It’s fun in short bursts, but the lack of polish drags it down.

For a 3DS game, Humanity in Chains looks good. The character models are recognizable, and the Titans are appropriately creepy, tho the environments are repetitive. The anime cutscenes are a nice touch, but they’re just recycled from the show, so don’t expect anything new. Performance-wise, it runs okay but the frame rate can dip when things get chaotic, not ideal when precision is key to gameplay.
If you’ve seen the anime, you know what to expect. The main story mode hits the major beats, but it’s rushed and lacks the emotional weight of the source material. The game nails the desperation and tension of the SnK world tho, running out of gas or blades mid fight is as stressful as it should be.
