HAGANE: The Final Conflict
HAGANE: The Final Conflict is basically what happens if you mix a cyborg ninja with ancient Japanese curses. The story is as thin as they come, two ninja clans, the Fuma and the Koma are beefing over the Holy Grail (yeah, the actual Holy Grail
), the bad guys steal it, wipe out almost everyone and our guy Hagane gets rebuilt as a robot with only his brain intact to go get revenge. It's the cheesiest movie setup but the game knows you don't care about the plot because the second you press START, you're too busy flipping around and slicing stuff to read any text anyway. The whole revenge thing is just an excuse to throw you into a steampunk feudal Japan and that's all you really need.

The gameplay is where this thing clicks with you. It's a sidescrolling action platformer in the vein of Shinobi or NINJA GAIDEN but Hagane himself has a toolbox that's almost too big for his own good. You've got your standard sword, shurikens, grenades and a chain whip that can also work as a grappling hook and you can swap between them on the fly. On top of that, the dude can do somersaults, wall jumps, sliding kicks and this weird aerial cartwheel move that feels awesome when you pull it off but is finicky as hell.
The problem is, the game gives you all these cool gear but then doesn't always know what to do with them, half the special moves feel like they're just there for style points and you'll probably stick to the sword and shurikens for 90% of the game because they're the most reliable. It's a bit of a bummer 'cuz you can tell the devs had a good time designing this moveset but the level design doesn't always push you to get creative with it.
The difficulty is the big talking point here, it's brutal but like, fairly brutal most of the time. You die in three hits, health pickups are random drops and checkpoints are few and far between, so you'll be replaying sections a lot. It's the kind of game where you have to memorize enemy patterns and platforming gauntlets and once you do, you feel like a god zipping through levels that used to kick your ass.
That said, there are some cheap moments, especially in the later stages where the game throws weird autoscrolling sections at you or forces you to use that janky air dash over bottomless pits.
The final level in particular cranks the frustration up to eleven 'cuz demands pixel perfect platforming, but if you're patient and don't mind dying a lot, the satisfaction of finally clearing a tough section is unmatched.
Visually is a whole vibe. The art direction is easily its strongest asset, mixing both dark gritty steampunk and cyberpunk tech with traditional Japanese iconography like wooden temples and oni masks.
The sprites are huge and detailed with Hagane himself looking menacing and the bosses are straight up works of art, they're massive mechanical demons. The color palette is moody and desaturated which fits the end of the world aesthetic perfectly, even if some backgrounds can feel a bit too dark and samey after a while.
The sound tho, is a bit of a letdown, the music is serviceable, mixing techno beats and traditional Japanese instruments but it's pretty forgettable and doesn't pump you up the way a game this intense deserves.

The Koma clan thought they had silenced every last Fuma warrior, but Momochi's dark cyberscience gave your brain a second lease on life and now it's your turn to finish what they started. You've already read through the ancient scrolls and studied the enemy's patterns, so there's only one move left to make, downloading this beast onto your system and letting the carnage begin. First things first, make sure your system is running homebrew, 'cuz the Koma ain't gonna play fair and neither should you. Once that's squared away, boot up that FBI app from your HOME Menu and point that camera at the QR code down below and let the transfer rip. The data will surge through your system and when it's all done, Hagane himself will materialize right on your HOME Menu, standing tall alongside your other icons. The Holy Grail isn't going to retrieve itself and those Koma scum are still out there, so don't keep him waiting, fire it up and remind them why you don't mess with a cyborg ninja on a revenge trip!
