METAL GEAR SOLID: Master Collection
METAL GEAR SOLID drops you into the boots of Solid Snake, a retired special ops legend dragged back into the game for one last mission. The setup? A rogue special forces unit, FOXHOUND, has seized control of a remote Alaskan nuclear facility, Shadow Moses, threatening to nuke the world if their demands aren’t met. Leading them is Liquid Snake, Snake’s genetically engineered twin, along with a crew of superpowered freaks like Revolver Ocelot (a cowboy with a gun fetish ) and Psycho Mantis (a telepathic edgelord who reads your memory card). Snake’s gotta sneak in, rescue hostages, stop Metal Gear REX, and uncover a conspiracy involving clones, nanomachines, and government lies.

METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 1
METAL GEAR SOLIDThe game blends stealth, action, and cinematic storytelling in a way that was revolutionary. Unlike most shoot ’em ups, MGS punishes Rambo tactics, you’re encouraged to avoid fights, hide in boxes, and choke out guards instead of going loud. The story’s packed with twists, long winded codec calls, and some fourth wall breaking moments (in the Psycho Mantis fight). By the end, you’re left questioning loyalty, the cost of war, and whether genes really determine destiny.
MGS defined the stealth genre. The isometric view and radar made planning moves essential, getting spotted meant swarms of guards and instant Game Over if alarms triggered. The controls feel clunky now: tank controls, no free aiming. You have gadgets like silenced pistols, thermal goggles, and remote missiles. Distracting guards with magazines, hiding in lockers, or straight up avoiding conflict entirely kept the tension high. Boss fights were puzzles, beating Psycho Mantis required switching controller ports, and Vulcan Raven forced you to outthink, not outshoot.
The plot’s a mix of Cold War paranoia, sci-fi and melodrama. The cutscenes are long and the themes (nuclear proliferation, genetic determinism) are heavy handed but engaging. The personal stakes, like Snake confronting his identity as a clone, add depth. The supporting cast shines too, like Meryl and Otacon.
The voice acting Snake set a new standard, and the cinematic direction (y'know, slow pans, dramatic close ups) makes it feel like playing a movie. The soundtrack’s minimalist but effective, that alert noise still triggers panic, the graphics are blocky tho but surprisingly immersive. Even small details, cigarette smoke revealing laser traps, added immersion.
Its blend of stealth, narrative, and metahumor inspired countless titles. The gameplay’s dated by modern standards, but the creativity holds up. Later entries refined the mechanics, but the original’s charm lies in its rawness, Kojima unshackled, experimenting with interactivity and storytelling in ways nobody else dared.
The European versions also had minor censorship, blood was toned down, a few suggestive lines got axed. They also run a bit slower, and some of the dubs like the German and Italian are awful. On top of that, the Italian and Spanish translations are incomplete, with missing lines, butchered codec calls, and confusing item descriptions. Thankfully, the Spanish-speaking fanbase wasn’t having it, modders and translators stepped in later to fully retranslate the game, fixing bugs and restoring cut content.

The VR Missions are a standalone expansion that stripped away the story and focused purely on gameplay challenges. Some are straightforward like sneak past guards and snipe targets, while others get weird with invisible floors, FPS segments, even a mode where you play as Gray Fox. I added a fix for the most annoying quirk, no more forced dis cswapping. This patch not only nukes that pointless requirement but also tosses in multilanguage support, because why not?

METAL GEAR SOLID: INTEGRAL was Japan’s answer to the Director’s Cut trend, a rerelease with a few extras, including the VR Missions, an alternate sneaking suit for Snake, a Very Easy mode and a FPS mode. It's playable in English, but there's some text stuck in Japanese, like the items description. So, it’s best saved for after you’ve beaten the original.

Hear me out, Snake. Choose your infiltration route, select your language and engage the download protocol. Alternatively, deploy the FBI app for Remote Installation via Codec if you prefer a more… unconventional and longer extraction. Once secured, the data will remain dormant on your HOME Menu, primed for activation. Await your signal. The choice is yours. We're counting on you!
