SONIC×SHADOW GENERATIONS
SONIC GENERATIONS for the 3DS is like the little brother to its consoles and modern counterparts. Instead of a watered down port, it tries doing its own thing, mashing up the classic SONIC feel with the boost from SONIC RUSH games. You got both Classic and Modern Sonic running through seven remixed stages but instead of picking the usual hits, it goes for stages from SONIC RUSH and SONIC COLORS instead. The whole vibe is less like a grand anniversary party and more like «Hey, remember these handheld deep cuts?».

SONIC GENERATIONS
Gameplay splits into two acts per zone: Classic Sonic gets moment based platforming that works until the game hands him a homing attack halfway through, which defeats the whole point. Modern Sonic plays smoother, ripping through 2.5D levels with that boost gauge and a lot of automation, so it feels flashy but not super deep.
The level design copies Green Hill, Casino Night and Mushroom Hill almost one to one from the originals but then Emerald Coast and Tropical Resort offer some fun setpieces and the special stages from SONIC HEROES actually control decently here, thank goodness!
Boss fights are a mixed bag. Rival battles against Metal Sonic, Shadow and Silver are just rubberbanding nonsense that makes you restart constantly, while the major bosses are okay but forgettable. That said, the final fight against the Time Eater is way more tolerable than the console versions, 'cuz it actually lets you hit it without pulling your hair out. The story gets told through text boxes with animated 3D sprites, which is charming but the dialogues aren't fully voiced and most of Sonic's friends being reduced to cameos makes it feel emptier.
This version is trashed for being short and janky and yeah, some enemy placements feel cheap while Classic Sonic's physics act weird but if you go in expecting a quick handheld spin rather than a grand tribute, it's not awful at all. The music slaps, the 3D effect adds depth without hurting performance and the Versus Mode is a fun way to kill time. Just don't compare it to the consoles or modern versions or you'll end up disappointed.
