While the console versions offer a mix of 3D and 2D levels, the 3DS sticks predominantly to a 2D style with a few 3D elements (console's 3D effect ). This makes it feel more like the classic Sonic games from the 90s, which is a huge win if you’re a fan of that retro vibe.
The 3DS version has unique levels not found in other versions, like Mushroom Hills and Emerald Coast. It creatively reimagines levels from earlier Sonic games, mixing and matching elements that give you that sweet nostalgia kick while introducing some fresh mechanics.
The control scheme is tight, and Sonic feels responsive. The levels are designed for quick play sessions, which makes it perfect if you just want to pick up and go. Plus, the addition of Wisps from Sonic Colors adds a layer of strategy to the gameplay as you can use them to traverse obstacles and reach hidden areas.
While it may not boast the same visual fidelity as the console versions, the graphics on the 3DS are vibrant and charming. The soundtrack remixes classic tunes that will have you humming along, a delightful nod to the series’ history.
