METAL SLUG X
METAL SLUG X is the definitive version of METAL SLUG 2, it takes everything that made the original arcade run-and-gun masterpiece great: tight controls, amazing sprite work, and over-the-top action, and polishes it to a shine. The slowdown issues from MS2? Gone. The result is a smoother, faster, and even more chaotic ride that’s packed with new weapons, enemies, and secrets. If you love pixel-perfect mayhem, this is it.

The gameplay is simple but punishing, run, shoot, and try not to die. You pull off insane dodges and precision shots even when the screen is flooded with bullets, explosions, and enemy soldiers screaming as they burst into flames. The weapon variety is insane, from the Heavy Machine Gun that turns you into a walking death machine to the iconic Rocket Launcher that sends enemies flying with a single shot. And let’s not forget the Slug vehicles: tanks, mechs, even a camel with a machine gun, that make you feel unstoppable… until they blow up in your face.
Visually, this game is a flex. The sprite work is absurdly detailed, with every explosion, character animation, and environmental detail oozing personality. The enemy designs are wild, from zombie soldiers to alien mutants, and the bosses are massive, screen-filling monstrosities that demand quick reflexes and a ton of bullets. The humor is also peak METAL SLUG, watch as your character turns into a flailing, overweight mess after eating too much or gets haunted by a ghost for no reason. It’s stupid but in the best way.
The difficulty? Brutal, but fair. You’ll die a lot, but it never feels cheap, just a reminder that you gotta get good. If there’s any downside, it’s that the game is short (typical for arcade games) but the replay value comes from chasing high scores, finding hidden routes, and unlocking all the ridiculous Easter eggs.
Bottom line: METAL SLUG X is a near-perfect run-and-gun experience. It’s fast, frantic, and full of personality, with gameplay that holds up decades later. If you love action games that don’t hold your hand and reward skill, this one’s a must-play. Just try not to burn through all your credits in one sitting.
