Golden Sun

Golden Sun is a classic JRPG that nails the perfect blend of puzzle solving, turn based combat, and an engaging story. You play as Isaac, a young Adept with the power to manipulate Psynergy (basically magic tied to the elements animeglasses), who embarks on a journey to stop the villains from lighting the four elemental lighthouses, which if activated, could either save or doom the world. The plot starts simple but gets more intriguing as secrets unfold, with twists that keep you hooked.

The combat is traditional turn based but spiced up with Djinn, little creatures you collect that modify your stats, grant new abilities, and enable devastating summons. Swapping Djinn around to customize your party’s class and playstyle is super satisfying. Outside of battles, Psynergy doubles as a tool for solving puzzles, which are everywhere. Dungeons are packed with brain teasers involving pushing blocks, freezing water, or growing vines, making exploration feel rewarding. Some puzzles are tough, but pulling them off gives a real sense of accomplishment.

Visually, the sprite work is gorgeous, with vibrant colors and detailed environments that bring the fantasy world of Weyard to life. The battle animations, especially the summons, are ridiculously flashy for a GBA game, watching Thor’s hammer smash the screen never gets old. The soundtrack, composed by Motoi Sakuraba, is an absolute banger, blending epic orchestral tunes with catchy melodies.

That said, Golden Sun isn’t flawless. The pacing drags at times, with long stretches of dialogue that could’ve been trimmed. The difficulty can also be uneven, some bosses will wreck you if you don’t grind or strategize properly, while others fold like paper. And while the story is engaging, the cliffhanger ending (since it leads directly into The Lost Age) might leave you frustrated if you weren’t expecting it.

Another flaw in Golden Sun’s otherwise stellar soundtrack is that the basslines are nearly inaudible since the hardware just couldn’t handle deep frequencies well, the bass guitar in the music often got lost. The Bass Patch replaces the original bass sample with one that has more harmonics, making it more audible even on the game’s weak built in speaker. It’s a small but clever adjustment that shows how much the soundtrack benefits from proper bass presence.

The QoL patch takes inspiration from Dawn of Djinn (another Golden Sun hack) but keeps the original game’s feel while adding some much needed convenience. The biggest changes are Retreat and Avoid, two abilities that were pretty limited in the original. Now, Retreat works like a fast travel system on the world map, letting you warp to any visited town instead of just resetting you to a dungeon’s entrance. It’s not game breaking since Golden Sun is linear, but it saves time backtracking. Avoid, meanwhile, becomes a toggle for random encounters instead of a temporary effect, which is a godsend for grinding or just speeding through areas.

Other tweaks include free out of battle Psynergy (no more wasting PP on utility moves like Growth or Whirlwind) and Psynergy items being repurchasable if sold. The hack also offers addons like autorun (default sprinting, with B to walk) and Cutscene Skip for veterans who just want to blaze through the story. There are some minor bugs tho, Avoid can glitch if saved while active, and Retreat has occasional visual hiccups, but nothing game breaking.
