[Parasite Eve]
Parasite Eve is a blend of survival horror, RPG, and sci-fi craziness. You play as Aya Brea, a badass NYPD cop who’s just trying to enjoy Christmas Eve until people around her suddenly burst into flames, thanks to a mysterious woman named Eve. Turns out, Eve’s mitochondria (yeah, the cell stuff you learned in biology ) have gone rogue, giving her insane powers and a plan to evolve humanity into… something else.
Aya’s own mitochondria give her resistance to Eve’s powers, so she’s basically the only one who can stop this nightmare. The story takes you from creepy opera houses to underground labs, mixing body horror with deep cut science fiction in a way that’s totally unique.

Gameplay's like a weird hybrid of Resident Evil and Final Fantasy. You’ve got tank controls and fixed camera angles, but battles are semi-real time with an ATB gauge (Active Time Battle) straight out of classic SQUARE RPGs. Aya can move freely in combat, dodging attacks while waiting for her turn to shoot or use abilities. The weapon customization is super satisfying, you can upgrade guns with different stats and effects, which keeps the combat fresh. There’s also magic (called PE abilities), fueled by mitochondria, because why not? The mix of horror tension and RPG depth works surprisingly well, even if the controls are still kinda clunky.
The narrative is a sci-fi horror trip, diving deep into pseudoscience about mitochondria becoming sentient and trying to take over. It’s based on a novel (which got a movie too), and the game does a great job making the science feel plausible enough to be unsettling. Aya’s a great protagonist, tho but vulnerable, with a personal connection to the madness. Eve is a standout villain, equal parts seductive and terrifying, with a god complex that drives the story forward. The themes of evolution, humanity’s fragility and body horror are handled in a way that’s thought provoking without getting too pretentious.
For a PS1 game, Parasite Eve still looks fine. The prerendered backgrounds are detailed and moody, and the character models, while blocky, have a ton of personality. The soundtrack's fire, mixing orchestral pieces with eerie electronic vibes, perfectly setting the tone for each scene. The opera house sequence, with its haunting vocals is unforgettable.

Mitochondria are stirring, operative. The choice is yours, initiate direct download protocol or deploy the FBI app for a more... experimental extraction. Either way, the package will lie dormant on your HOME Menu, waiting for activation. Just remember: every cell has a memory. Proceed with caution. The future of your genome depends on it.
Also, this game didn’t spawn a huge franchise, but it got a sequel which went full action horror, and a weird third game on PSP that… we don’t talk about, so let’s just focus on the fun part. Wanna dive into the sequel? It’s waiting right here!
