Each game follows a similar formula: investigations and courtroom battles. During investigations, you scour crime scenes for clues, talk to witnesses and piece together evidence. The real meat tho is the courtroom showdowns, where you listen to testimonies, spot contradictions and present evidence to tear apart lies. The gameplay is simple, like a logic puzzle where the stakes are life and death. The trilogy’s cases escalate in complexity, with Trials and Tribulations being the peak weaving an intricate narrative that ties the whole saga together.
The writing is where Ace Attorney shines. The cases are wild, think a witnessing puppet or even a parrot! But the games balance absurdity with genuine emotional weight. Phoenix is a lovable underdog but the real stars are the supporting cast: his fiery mentor Mia Fey, the eccentric spirit medium Maya, the smug rival prosecutor Miles Edgeworth and a parade of unforgettable witnesses. Justice for All has a weaker overall plot but introduces the psyche lock mechanic and Franziska von Karma, while Trials and Tribulations delivers a phenomenal finale with deep backstory and payoff.
The HD sprites are vibrant, and the exaggerated animations give the game its signature charm, nothing beats a witness sweating bullets when they’re caught in a lie. The soundtrack is iconic, from the tense Pursuit themes to the melancholic Reminiscence tracks. The remastered audio and visuals keep the nostalgia intact while making everything look and sound cleaner.
The games aren’t perfect. Some cases drag (Turnabout Big Top, I’m side eyeing you ) and the linear nature means replay value is low once you know the solutions. The logic can sometimes be too convoluted, expect moments where the right answer feels like a stretch. Also, while the localization is fantastic (full of puns and personality), the trilogy retains some dated design choices, like pixel-hunting for evidence during investigations.
