Xenogears
Xenogears follows Fei Fong Wong, an amnesiac artist with sick martial arts skills who gets dragged into a conflict involving giant robots called Gears and ancient conspiracies. Along the way, he teams up with rebels, priests and other misfits, uncovering layers of psychological, philosophical and religious themes, kinda like Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The plot is dense, jumping between past lives, interstellar wars, and existential crises, all while exploring heavy topics like identity, trauma, and the nature of God. The second disc infamously rushes through plot points due to budget constraints, swapping gameplay for long dialogue sequences but the narrative remains gripping despite the pacing issues.
The combat system is split between on foot battles and Gear fights. Human scale combat is traditional turn based JRPG while Gear battles use fuel management and combo finishers for big damage. It’s fun but uneven, early fights drag and Gear upgrades are kinda grindy. Some dungeons have great puzzles and others overuse block pushing or cryptic switches.
The gear customization is deep but underexplained. You can tweak your mechs with different engines and weapons, but the game doesn’t always clarify what’s optimal. Random encounters are frequent, which is annoying sometimes, but the boss fights especially the Gear duels are hype as hell.
Also, Xenogears is a narrative powerhouse, but it’s a lot The script dives into freudian psychology, nietzschean philosophy, gnosticism, and even mecha anime tropes. Characters Citan, a doctor with secrets, and Elly, Fei’s love interest tied to his past lives are fleshed out with legit depth. Antagonists like Krelian and Grahf are compelling in their moral ambiguity, no one’s purely evil, just warped by their obsessions. Yasunori Mitsuda’s soundtrack is a masterpiece, blending orchestral, rock, and folk vibes. The pixel art is gorgeous with detailed sprites and 3D Gear designs, and the anime cutscenes are sparse but impactful.
