Higurashi: When They Cry Hō

Higurashi: When They Cry is a massive mystery split into four Questions Arcs that just leave you super confused and four Answers Arcs that slowly piece everything together. It's all about this group of friends in a tiny rural town called Hinamizawa, where for the past five years, someone has died and someone else has vanished on the same night every year after the big Watanagashi festival. You start off seeing things through the eyes of Keiichi, the new kid in town, which is perfect 'cuz you're just as clueless as he is about all the creepy rumors and the seriously off putting vibe the place has sometimes.

Real talk now, this game's a total slog at times. The early slice of life stuff drags on forever with club activities and punishment games and there are definitely scenes that overstay their welcome but when it's good, it's so good. The way it builds tension is insane, especially in the first arc, Onikakushi, which will have you feeling legit scared and paranoid playing it late at night. The best part is how it makes you play detective; after each question arc, the characters have these little chats where they break down what just happened and it's so cool when one of your own theories turns out to be right later on. The characters are the real heart of it all, they're all written so well that you completely understand why they do the messed up things they do, even when you're screaming at your screen for them to just talk to each other.

For a game made mostly by one guy with simple but cute anime visuals and no voice acting, it's wild how gripping it can be, the writing alone does all the heavy lifting to create this incredibly eerie and emotional atmosphere. It tackles some really heavy themes like child abuse, discrimination and mental illness in a way that feels genuine and not just for shock value. At its core, it's a story about hope and the power of friendship, which I know sounds cheesy, but after everything these characters go through, you're just rooting for them so hard. It's a must play for any VN fan, but maybe clear your schedule first, this thing is longer than like, three regular novels put together.
