Friday Night Funkin'

Friday Night Funkin' is this game that stuck around outta nowhere during the pandemic. Its plot is literal cockblocking, you play as The Boyfriend, who's just trying to get a moment alone with his Girlfriend, and every single person in their life shows up to interrupt with a rap battle. Her dad shows up because he doesn't approve, then after losing, the guy gets so salty he hires three hitmen, who happened to be BF's middleschool classmates. One of them turns out to be Boyfriend's ex, Pico (the same from Pico's School), so instead of shooting him, Pico's like «Nah, let's just have a sick beat off for old times' sake » then the whole situation immediately flips from an assassination to something way more personal. Anyways, the whole point is to hit the arrow keys in time with the music, trying to outsing your opponent. It sounds simple but when the beats get crazy fast and the patterns get all tricky, it becomes a real test of your reflexes and rhythm. It's the kind of game that's challenging in a way that makes you wanna get better.

The style of the game uses Newgrounds-era flash animation, so the characters are expressive. The music are just bops (literally) with every single track perfectly matching the character you're facing. From the spooky atmospheric tunes when you're against Skid and Pump to the full on pop chaos when facing M.I.L.F., you'll probably find yourself listening to the songs even when you're not playing.

The modding scene always has a new challenge or cool new characters or mechanics to check out and the vibes of the game always had this cool early 2000's feel that reminded people of CN City bumpers and the PlayStation era, even the devs use it for album covers! Someone actually went and made that idea real with a project called PSXFunkin. It's a shame it's not being worked on anymore, because it was a genuinely awesome take on the game.  

Then there's the Flop Engine, which is a fork of PSXFunkin, and it went wild with new stuff. It added a whole shop system, like in Friday Night Funkin' Lullaby, so you had to actually earn your way to later weeks by playing well. You can unlock songs from the original Hatsune Miku mod, and the biggest hit in 2024, Silly Billy. It even adds a ton of stuff like a Hell Mode, a proper pause menu and botplay. It's still kinda janky in some places (like Week 5 being a whole buggy mess) and it still lacks some modern V-Slice features like the Weekend or alternate mixes, but the amount of content and cool ideas it packs in is impressive.
