The Streets of Rage (or Bare Knuckle) Anthology bundles together the legendary trilogy that defined the beat 'em up genre for a generation. It follows the story of ex cops and their allies cleaning up the crime riddled Wood Oak City from the grip of the sinister Mr. X and his Syndicate. Across three titles, you punch, kick and slam your way through waves of stylish goons to an iconic electronic soundtrack. This collection isn't just a straight dump of the old cartridges, I've included some essential romhacks to give you the most complete experience. So let's kick in!
Streets of Rage: Bare Knuckle Anthology
Streets of Rage
The original Streets of Rage kicked everything off with a solid straightforward brawl. You pick from Axel, Blaze or Adam and march from the streets to a penthouse, whacking punks with pipes and eating chicken off the ground. It feels classic but a bit simple now, your move set is pretty basic and that screen clearing police car special attack feels kinda OP but also awesome to call in. The mood tho is unbeatable, the graphics are all moody neon and rain slicked streets and Yuzo Koshiro's soundtrack is pure driving techno that makes you feel like the coolest vigilante ever. For this game, I've added a neat patch that finally lets a solo player get the bad ending by betraying the team and another that saves your high scores, so your bragging rights are permanent.

Streets of Rage 2
Streets of Rage 2 is where everything clicked and became legendary. They expanded the roster with the speedy Skate and powerhouse Max and gave everyone a huge list of new moves like running attacks and blitz moves that actually made combat feel deep. The stages got way more imaginative, taking you from a baseball stadium to a hovercraft, and the enemy designs became memorable. The music evolved too, mixing house and breakbeat into an absolute masterpiece that you'll listen to even when you're not playing. This game is basically perfect but I've still included the PLUS ULTRA patch, it lets characters tear through the game with new abilities, a mana system for specials and juggle combos. It's a freshway to replay an already phenomenal game.

Streets of Rage 3
Then came Streets of Rage 3, a game that tried to get fancy and kinda stumbled. It added a run button, branching paths and multiple endings which are cool ideas, but dude, they made it brutally hard in the West, tweaking enemy AI to be merciless and cutting out a whole boss. It's still a good brawler with flashy visuals but it can feel unfair. That's why this anthology fixes it, I'm using the full Japanese version, with its better difficulty balance, enhanced story and restored content, fully translated. On top of that, there's an alternative project that fixes bugs, restores and improves the hidden bike stages and polishes the gameplay so it finally feels as complete as it was meant to be.
