Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Re-Revenge
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Re-Revenge is a romhack that does something wild, it takes the classic beat 'em up Streets of Rage 2 and completely transforms it into a Turtles adventure. It's not just a sprite swap either. The whole thing feels like a secret Genesis game that never was but playing out with that modern Shredder's Revenge style. The city's under attack, Shredder and Krang are causing chaos and you gotta pick from the whole crew (all four Turtles, April, Splinter and Casey Jones) to clean things up.

Jumping into the gameplay, it's instantly familiar if you know Streets of Rage 2, but the mechanics are totally tweaked to match the faster pace of the Turtles game. You can run and jump farther, pull off special moves while sprinting and the juggle system is a game changer. Enemies can combo you too, which keeps you on your toes. There's even a turbo mode in the options that speeds up the attack rhythm, making everything feel more intense. It's rad how they rebuilt the physics, punching and kicking just feels right and pulling off a slick combo string is super satisfying. The downside is that the enemy variety isn't huge, since it's built from the original Streets of Rage 2 enemy roster, but the new attacks they gave certain Foot Ninjas keep things fresh.
As for the visuals, they ripped the gorgeous sprites right from Shredder's Revenge and somehow made them work on the Genesis. The colors pop way more than you'd expect from a 16-bit game and every character and boss has a detailed shadow that adds a ton of depth. The new story screens and title screen complete the illusion that you're playing a legitimate TMNT title, even if they're really simple.
It seems the soundtrack is the same from Streets of Rage 2, which is fantastic but doesn't quite feels right with the Turtles roaming around for some people. The music change hack swaps in proper TMNT-style tunes, pulling from the games and the animated series. It transforms the atmosphere and addresses the biggest stylistic clash the original hack had and makes the whole package feel cohesive.

Then there's Another Edition from the original developers. They added a proper dodge roll with a button combo, which is a huge deal for avoiding those enemy juggles. There's also a new running attack, a dedicated recovery animation and even the ability to switch characters on the fly, which is perfect for experimenting with everyone's moves mid-fight. Little touches like altering enemy placements and cleaning up the intro, prove they were listening to feedback. They even tweaked Leo's combo to launch enemies, giving him a more unique feel.
