Policenauts
Policenauts is a game by Hideo Kojima that blends detective drama with sci fi flair and it’s one of those games that sticks with you long after the credits roll. Set in a future where humanity has colonized space, you play as Jonathan Ingram, a former space cop who’s been in cryo sleep for 25 years after a freak accident. When he wakes up, he’s thrown into a conspiracy involving his ex’s murder, a shady pharmaceutical company and a whole lot of political corruption. The story’s packed with twists, and while some are predictable, the way it all unfolds is gripping thanks to sharp writing and a noir tone that never lets up.

The gameplay is classic point and click adventure with a detective twist. You’ll investigate crime scenes, interrogate suspects and piece together clues, all while navigating some seriously dense dialogue. The pacing can drag at times, even for a VN, but the world building and character interactions make it worth it. The shooting segments, where you manually aim and fire during action scenes add a nice burst of tension, even if they’re a bit clunky. It’s not about reflexes as much as it is about making the right choices under pressure, which fits the detective vibe perfectly.
Visually, the game oozes style. The retro anime character designs are expressive as hell and the cyberpunk meets noir aesthetic gives the world a ton of personality. The soundtrack is a banger too, mixing jazzy noir tones with synthwave beats that set the mood perfectly.
